COLOURS OF AUSTRALIA – GARDEN GALLERY – ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN, SYDNEY – 20 SEPT TO 20 OCT

GAR

The experience of a Kimberley cruise from Darwin to Broome is on the bucket list of many retirees and so it was on mine. It was magical and exciting, day after day. My new works are inspired by the Kimberley’s colour of the water and the towering and tumbling rocks, the reflections in that lucid water, the waterfalls, the excitement of being under them, the birds and the crocodiles. It is indeed a vast archaelogical paradise, an unspoilt wilderness, where we left nothing but our footprints, to be washed way by the huge tides. Adventurers and grey nomads have always loved the colourful outback of the Kimberley as well, all the gorgeous gorges along the Gibb River Road, the Bungles, the Ord River and Lake Argyle are some of the favourites. As a couple John and I traversed all these places, weeks at a time, setting up our tent and then John riding his bike whilst I stood before my easel painting ‘en plein air’. Back home I painted larger works in acrylics and oils and now in Encaustic as well. Even now I create new works from my photos of those trips.

BIOGRAPHY

I am an artist with three nationalities that have made up my life experiences – born in Holland, then emigrating with my parents to South Africa and eventually choosing to live in Australia with my husband and three children during l988.

My early studies took place in South Africa, but it was in Australia with its very active art world that I became most prolific in my output and variety  of subject matter, and equally at home with oils, watercolours and acrylics.

Acknowledged as a popular watercolour and mixed media teacher,  I have tutored regular classes for 25 years.

I have accumulated an impressive list of awards and commendations for my work and have been widely exhibited, both in group exhibitions and solo shows.  During 2006 I exhibited internationally with a solo exhibition on the Greek island of Leros.  I have been published with major contributions to art magazines and I was a member of several art societies, including the Royal Art Society  and  the Australian Society of Marine Artists, Castle Hill Art Society and Central Coast Art Society.

I live at Pearl Beach on the Central Coast amidst stunning scenery – my main inspiration.  My studio opens on Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm or by appointment. I welcome commissions, whether portraiture or landscape.

Artwork prices are comparatively affordable and reasonable.

Finally embarked on the Coral Cruise from Darwin to Broome that had been cancelled during Covid and have been painting many new seascapes from photos of that amazing journey, with a view to an exhibition somewhere. Organised a solo exhibition “SURFACE SEDUCTION” at The Shop Gallery during September 2023, showing encaustic work, trees and a selection of Boats painted at The Heritage Fleet earlier.

TREE WHISPERING

An ever changing exhibition of tree paintings completed plein air on site in bush land and bays – mostly around the Central Coast,  but also inland Australia. I am passionate about trees and the various roles they play in our lives and in their own habitat.

CENTRAL COAST LANDSCAPES

An ever changing exhibition of oil paintings painted plein air on site in bush land and bays mostly around the central coast.  Paintings are colour co-ordinated, so the possibility exists to group them together in sets of your choice, as shown below.  The squares all measure 53 x 53.

BIRDS AND WILDLIFE

Upon arrival in Australia 30 years ago, I was enchanted by the first birds I encountered in the suburbs of Sydney – Kookaburras, Lorikeets, Galahs and Cockatoos.  They were the subjects of many of my first paintings here.   And still they come! with travels we have met many more along the road. Since then we have come across many snakes, echidnas, and wombats. I also painted our whole safari in South Africa.

GREEK WATERCOLOURS

From the islands of Leros and Lesbos. All of these works are watercolours, full sheet, half or quarter. They are mostly unframed, as they were hung here in Gosford and then exhibited in Leros.

“This exhibition is the result of several trips to the Greek islands of Leros and Lesbos by the artist.  She has painted Greece with the enthusiasm of a tourist and the insight of a local.  Her vibrant watercolours are based on the people, places and experiences of everyday life as a tourist in greece.”

Tim Braham, Curator, Gosford Regional Gallery

COLOUR AND DESIGN

As a respite from realism, I am venturing into abstraction. Impressions are materialised into colour fields. Controlled spontaneity is the essence of my colour and design paintings, creating movement with brush strokes as individual as calligraphy and that retain their impulse, implying texture that is not there, just capturing my own excitement.

ABOUT BOATS

As I was a Member of The Australian Society Of Marine Painters, I Was recently invited  With nine other women as ‘Artists In Residence’ on the Heritage Fleet At Rozelle Bay – The Exhibition was shown between decks on The ‘James Craig at Wharf 7, Pyrmont Bay.

I had the honour of being awarded ‘The President’s Medal’ for my painting of  ‘The John Oxley – Full Frontal’ as shown here.

Boats bob about and I capture them in paint before the wind turns them around or before they sail away.  I really paint boats so that I can paint their reflections.

I have just painted my first ’Artist’s Book’  with the International Fleet Review as the theme. Very enjoyable to paint it after sitting in the rain watching it. Cannot do it justice as a photograph.

FLORALS

GREENWAY IS MY NAME and so I have a natural affinity with flowers.  Nature is my inspiration – one look and I’m hooked.  As a keen gardener, I have painted just about everything I have ever grown.   Give artists a bunch of flowers and they’ll drop everything to paint them before they wilt. Poppies and irises are among my favourites.
